And SQL allows for (38,20) so that is the datatype in staging area. Obviously, calculations here are done on the columns not variables so its not that easy to catch the real problem. Using only 18,10 would 'fix' the problem but would also limit the possible values in the tables. Are those limits acceptable or not again depends on the environment&lt;/p&gt;

Declaration should be: &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;declare @q decimal (18,10), @r decimal(18,10), @e decimal (38,20)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;and then result will be what user expects.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But also, my opinion is that is better avoid multiplication or any other mathematical operation in T-SQL now when we have CLR enabled in SQL Server.&lt;/p&gt;
